How it works

Who’s eligible to apply to be a Magic Breakfast school?

  • At least 35% of your pupils should be recorded as eligible for Pupil Premium.

  • Primary – at least 55% of your pupils should be in Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation (SIMD) Decile 1-4.
  • Secondary – at least 40% of your pupils should be in SIMD Decile 1-4.

  • We don’t currently operate in Wales and Ireland but if you’re interested, please apply and we will contact you when this changes.

The breakfast club at Kingsland has an amazingly positive impact for children at the school, all of whom have severe and complex needs. Many pupils now transition into school more successfully and have developed their social and communication skills through the opportunities it provides. They have become more independent at start the day and ready to then engage in learning”

Applying for support

If you meet our criteria, here’s how you apply to become a Magic Breakfast school.

If you’re eligible, we’ll contact you as soon as a spot becomes available.

We’ll organise a visit from one of our engagement partners who works in your region to understand more about what your school’s needs.

Together with your engagement partner you’ll decide on a breakfast model that works best for you.

Agreements will go into place and weekly orders set up with our delivery partner.

Enjoy your Magic Breakfast!

Which breakfast model works for your school?

Your dedicated engagement partner will get an understanding of your school, alongside the children, young people and community. They’ll consider and discuss any issues, concerns, or barriers you may be facing so the breakfast set up works for your environment. Based on this we’ll share our different breakfast models with you, our Magic Menu of food items and how everything works.

Magic Breakfast is here to support you to decide which hunger focused breakfast model works best for your school.

We’ll teach you to set up the breakfast in a barrier-free way, so that every child can access a healthy breakfast. Each set up in a school is adapted to suit the needs, requirements, and restrictions of a school and we have a wealth of experience in adapting what we do.

What do the school need to invest?

As a Magic Breakfast school, you’ll need to:

  • Pay a small membership fee.
  • Provide staff support to prepare and run the breakfast at your school.
  • Have a keen interest in addressing morning hunger in your school so the breakfast is rolled out in a hunger focused way. We’ll help with this too.
  • Work with us to help measure and monitor the impact of breakfast.

Which products will we receive?

This depends on a few things, including your breakfast set up, equipment and preparation access, and the products available. We provide bagels, bread, a wide range of cereals, baked beans and are starting to introduce milk and eggs to some areas.

Why can’t you confirm the exact food my school will get?

Whilst we can’t guarantee an exact product due to donations, availability and price, you can pick and choose from our different categories so you get the variety you want. This includes carbohydrates, protein and dairy. We do this so that our schools get their hands on a selection of products each week and children and young people get to try different things.

Where do you get your food from?

We partner with some of the UK’s most trusted and widely recognised food brands, including Quaker, Heinz, Arla, Weetabix and Warburtons to name a few. The products supplied to our partner schools vary for logistical and supply reasons, but range from cereals, granola, porridge (including porridge oats and sachets), bagels, bread, baked beans, milk and eggs. Our aim is to provide a high quality, healthy and nutritionally diverse breakfast provision to suit your school and we are constantly working with food partners to develop and improve the range we offer. Please contact us if you’d like to know more.

Do I need to provide any other food products for my school’s breakfast, or do you cover everything?

Our breakfast offer is constantly evolving, but there may be supplementary products that we currently can’t provide as part of it, such as spread for toast for example. These can be discussed with your engagement partner and are dependent on your order.
