Sophie Balmer, our Board Advisor, joined us to talk about her lived experience growing up in a low-income family, and the impact that breakfast provision – done right – can have on children and young people beyond the school gates.
Sophie has shared with us how breakfast provision in primary school was more than just a meal. It was a space that was fun, welcoming, teachers would sit with you and chat – a social and safe environment.
In contrast, Sophie highlights her breakfast experience at secondary school which was far less positive, and led to her stopping attending. This demonstrates the importance of secondary school provision, ensuring not only that children and young people begin the day with a healthy breakfast, but that they do so in a safe, stigma free space.
That’s why we’re campaigning for all children and young people to have access to breakfast at school. Find out more about our Breakfast Powers Opportunity campaign.
I spent majority of my secondary school not having breakfast and not, like, wanting to be there and finding that sort of environment, quite stressful.”
We’re so grateful that Sophie was able to join us for our Magic Morning, sharing her incredible insight, expertise and experience. Watch the full interview.
