For the past decade, our much-loved partners, Dishoom have been committed to supporting Magic Breakfast in our mission to end child morning hunger as a barrier to learning.

For every breakfast served in their restaurants, Dishoom donate the cost of a breakfast to us to help a child in need. This generous ‘meal for meal’ initiative has recently reached an incredible milestone of 25 million meals being donated by Dishoom to Magic Breakfast in the UK and The Akshaya Patra Foundation in India.

To top it all off, we’re thrilled that this amazing partnership has just won the Medium Corporate Partnership of the Year at the Third Sector Awards!

In the backdrop of this momentous milestone and wonderful award win, we spoke to Brian Trollip, Dishoom’s CEO, about the partnership, and our shared goal of filling tummies and inspiring future generations in school and beyond.

When we first learned of Magic Breakfast, their mission resonated deeply, and we are consistently inspired by their dedication to fuel growth and change in society.”

Could you tell us about Dishoom and what your role is?

Dishoom is a love letter to Bombay – its food and its culture, its wonderful people, its rich history and its endless eccentricities. We now have eleven Dishoom cafés across the UK, as well as four Permit Rooms. As CEO, my role is to guide our team, ensure our values shine through in everything we do, and keep us growing thoughtfully.

When did you first hear about Magic Breakfast?

For every meal we serve, we donate a meal to a child who would otherwise go hungry. A meal for a meal. During Ramadan back in 2015, we chose to support two wonderful charities – Magic Breakfast in the UK, and The Akshaya Patra Foundation in India. When we first learned of Magic Breakfast, their mission resonated deeply, and we are consistently inspired by their dedication to fuel growth and change in society.

This year we are celebrating 10 years of partnership. What is one of your favourite parts of the partnership?

It’s only right that we celebrate the difference that Magic Breakfast makes on a daily basis – children are arriving at school ready to learn because they have full bellies. That’s powerful. Celebrating 10 years feels like a reminder that small acts, consistently done, can create lasting change. Moments like when we invite schools into our cafes allow us to see first-hand the joy and impact of the partnership together in a very special way.

What are you most excited about for the future of the partnership?

I’m excited about extending our combined impact in order to reach even more children who need support, because sadly, childhood hunger remains such an urgent issue in this country. Looking ahead, I’m keen for us to keep building awareness and help to ensure hunger isn’t a barrier to learning.

Of course, we have to ask… what’s your favourite breakfast?

Well, that’s easy: a delicious Kejriwal at Dishoom with a cup of Chai, of course!
