Children and young people cannot learn well if they begin the day hungry, anxious or carrying the strain of hardship from home. This findings from our latest Annual Breakfast Survey highlight the growing pressures schools are navigating, from rising poverty to increasing concerns around mental health and wellbeing.

School breakfast provision is a simple but powerful response. It offers more than food, it creates a consistent, welcoming start to the day that helps pupils settle, connect, and feel they belong.

At its core, this is about belonging. And schools are clear about the difference it makes. 95% of schools believe that Magic Breakfast helps pupils feel they belong and are part of the school community.

A positive start to the day

For many pupils, mornings can be rushed, stressful, or unpredictable. School breakfast creates a space where routines, relationships, and a warm welcome help pupils feel safe and ready for the day ahead.

The impact is clear. 99% of our school tell us that their Magic Breakfast provision helps set pupils up to start their school day well.

These everyday moments, being greeted by familiar staff, spending time with friends, and having a calm start, help pupils arrive in class more settled and ready to learn.

Benefits that go beyond the classroom

When pupils feel they belong, the effects ripple through the whole school experience. Schools report improvements in relationships, behaviour and wellbeing, with breakfast provision helping to create a stronger, more connected school community.

But the impact doesn’t stop at the school gates.

Breakfast provision also plays a vital role in easing pressure on families. At a time when many households are facing financial strain and busy mornings, it provides reassurance that children will start the day nourished and cared for.

88% of our schools report that Magic Breakfast reduces morning stress for families and pressure on household budgets.

A simple solution with far-reaching impact

This year’s Annual Breakfast Survey findings show that school breakfast is more than an intervention, it’s a foundation for a better start to the day. By helping pupils feel safe, settled and part of their school community, it supports not just learning, but wellbeing, relationships, learning and family stability.

Together with our schools and partners, including Place2Be and Postcode Lottery, you’re helping make this story possible. Thank you.
