Helping you ensure the success of your school fundraiser is our top priority! So please take a moment to review the following guidelines as you plan your event to make sure all aspects are conducted in a safe and legal way.
To ensure that parents are informed and provide consent for their children’s participation in fundraising activities, please send a letter home or include information in your school newsletter – we have provided some template wording here, which you can adapt to suit your event and audiences. We would love to share photos of your school’s fundraising efforts on our social media channels however, prior to sending us any photos, please ensure that you have obtained parent’s consent for their use.
Please note that cash must never be left unattended. At an event, two adults should stay with the cash until it can be secured in a safe place and any cash received should be counted by two adults who are present throughout the counting. All cash donations should be banked at the earliest possible opportunity. You can also make your donation online or find information on other ways to donate here. Children under 16 should not be left in charge of handling or counting money.
Please keep in mind that children under 16 are not legally permitted to participate in public collections – such as in town centres. For permission and more information, please contact your local authority to obtain a licence and further guidance. If planning an event on private land, such as your local shopping centre, you will require permission from the landowner or manager. Please remember to check if they have any additional stipulations or requirements.
We recommend that schools create a Superkind or JustGiving sponsorship page. Superkind gives schools an easy, meaningful and most importantly safe platform for children to raise money for thousands of charities and good causes – including their own school. It is the only cross-charity fundraising platform in the world that can be legally used by children under 16. Sponsorship platforms also make claiming Gift Aid on donations easy. We also have downloadable sponsorship forms available for you to use. It is important to remind students to only seek sponsorship from individuals they know and to not request sponsorship in public places.
Please note that raffles are subject to strict lottery laws and, in some instances, a license from your local council may be necessary. For more information, please take a moment to read the Chartered Institute of Fundraising guidance.
For a successful Great Big Breakfast, bake-sale or any food related event, please follow food handling guidance – ensuring you adhere to the basic rules for safe preparation, storage, display and cooking. This includes labelling all items with ingredients to alert people with allergies. For further information and guidelines, please visit the Food Standards Agency website.
