The Food Foundation’s latest food insecurity tracker released today shows that 15.3% of households with children in the UK are experiencing food insecurity, up from 14.9% in June 2025. That’s equivalent to 4 children in a classroom of 30.

In addition, some children and young people are more at risk than others:

  • A quarter of households with 4 or more children are experiencing food insecurity.
  • Single-adult households with children are more than twice as likely to be food insecure than households without children.

We know that food insecurity is a root cause of child morning hunger. This means children and young people arriving at school hungry, anxious, and without the mental energy required to engage and thrive.

A year 3 pupil often arrived at school tired, distracted, and irritable. His teacher noticed he struggled to concentrate during morning lessons and frequently complained of stomach aches. After a conversation with his parents, it became clear that due to financial difficulties, breakfast was often skipped at home to save money for other meals and clothes. His mother shared that the mornings were stressful, filled with guilt and worry, knowing he was starting the day hungry…”

One way to tackle child morning hunger is by investing in universal school breakfast provision.

…Once he began receiving breakfast through a Magic Breakfast, his attendance improved, he was more alert, and he has become more engaged in lessons. His mother reported a positive change at home too, less stress and a greater sense of dignity and support.”

Together with others, we want to ensure that all children and young people are nourished, empowered and thriving.

If we want lasting change, we have to address the root causes and break the link between systems and the hunger children face each morning. This will improve children and young peoples’ lives far beyond breakfast.
