Thousands of secondary school children are at risk of losing their free school breakfasts from September next year.

For many of these students, this is their only opportunity to have a nutritious meal before facing a demanding school day, including taking exams.

We asked teachers at our partner schools to finish the sentence “Free school breakfasts for secondary school pupils means…” and this is what they said.

…providing students with a sense of belonging, that someone cares and ensures that they have the ‘fuel’ for the learning ahead. Many of my students literally depend on this provision.”

…we are ensuring that every child has a great start to the day, no matter what their age. Ensuring secondary schools receive the magic breakfast is so important for their growing bodies and when they are under more pressure as they are preparing for their exams.”

…that they attend school and engage with their learning more effectively. Some pupils do not eat until lunch time, without a breakfast provision, which has a detrimental effect on their wellbeing as well as their opportunity to learn.”
