Magic Breakfast’s CEO, Dr Lindsey MacDonald, has responded to the Scottish Government’s Programme for Government 2026 to 2031: Ambitious for Scotland. Read the full statement below.

Today’s Programme for Government has reiterated the Scottish Government’s commitment to delivering school breakfast provision in every primary school in the country.

First Minister, John Swinney, has made eradicating child poverty the defining mission of his Government and today’s promise to ensure students ‘get the most out of their school experience’ is a promise made directly to young Scots. Magic Breakfast stands ready to support this. School breakfast provision will support this mission whilst also boosting the Scottish economy, supporting families with the cost of living, and delivering stronger child health outcomes.

This policy, the biggest change to school food in this Parliament, will support children and young people from Brechin to Benbecula. However, at the upcoming Budget in December, Parliament must take the opportunity to ensure this programme also reaches children in special schools as the First Minister committed to in January.

Within this Parliament, it is the responsibility of every party at Holyrood to deliver for young Scots. My team and I will continue to support and guide this work to make school breakfast provision a successful, sustainable and accessible reality for every community across Scotland.
