Magic Breakfast is disappointed that the Scottish Government has not used today’s budget to commit investment to free school breakfasts. We hope this does not represent a wider policy change in introducing free school breakfast pilot projects in primary and special schools.

Whilst we welcome announcements such as the decision to double the Scottish child payment to £20 per week, we do not believe that this is enough to tackle the issue of child poverty in Scotland. Ending child poverty involves a cross policy response and we are proud to work with third sector partners to push for change in Scotland for Scotland’s children and young people.

When the Scottish Government announced in it’s Covid Recovery Strategy that free school breakfasts would form a part of the national emergence from the pandemic, Magic Breakfast welcomed this. We now call on the Scottish Government to fund their manifesto commitment to Scotland’s children and young people.

Over the coming weeks we will work with our partners to ensure that the Scottish Government remains committed to ensuring that no child is too hungry to learn.
