Magic Breakfast is delighted to have been chosen by the i newspaper to be the beneficiary of its 2020 Christmas Charity Appeal, in a year that has seen heartbreaking levels of child hunger as families struggle through the coronavirus pandemic.

Magic Breakfast focuses on reaching children in deprived areas of the UK who are at risk of hunger at the start of the school day.  We partner with schools to provide nutritious breakfasts to pupils so that they have the energy and focus for their morning of lessons, and the nutrients they need to grow and thrive.  Schools tell us that some children arrive in the morning having not eaten since their school lunch the previous day, unable to concentrate other than on the pain of their hunger. So we work closely with school staff to help identify pupils who won't have enough food at home and, drawing on twenty years of experience, devise ways of reaching them that fit into each, unique school's day, ways that are free from stigma and come with no barriers for children and families, such as cost.

2020 was a catastrophic year for many families who lost jobs and struggled in all sorts of ways due to Covid-19. Children at our partner schools have not only had to cope with the psychological pressures of school closures and lockdowns, family illness, and the terror of a pandemic, but there has been widespread hunger - and this is where Magic Breakfast has been able to help, by adapting the way we work to ensure children at risk of hunger continue to receive our breakfasts whether at school or home, and through the school holidays. We will be continuing this intensive level of help in 2021, doubling the number of partner schools, working with them to combat child hunger and help children catch up on lost learning.

Quote from Magic Breakfast partner school: “During the lockdown we saw an increase in financial poverty for many families who previously were not eligible for FSM. This meant that families were asking, for the first time, about how they could feed their families and turned to school to support.”

For just 34p Magic Breakfast could provide a schoolchild with a healthy breakfast, opening up a morning of learning;

£5.53 could give a child one month of Magic Breakfasts;

£34 could provide 100 breakfasts to schoolchildren at risk of hunger;

£66.29 could provide one year of term-time Magic Breakfasts for a hungry child;

£5,138 could provide a whole school with access to Magic Breakfast for one academic year.

i readers, through their donations to the i Christmas Charity Appeal, will be helping Magic Breakfast to keep children at the charity's partner schools well-nourished at the start of the school day, full of energy and ready for lessons, helping them to catch up on learning lost during school closures and lockdown and helping them to cope with the physical and psychological demands that 2021 will surely bring.

Thank you so much for your support.
